How to set up your GPS on Windows Mobile 5

If you are wondering what to do with your GPS setting in WM5, PocketPCThoughts has a good link that I think is worth saving for future reference : how to setup your gps on a WM5 device – straight from the horses mouth, so to speak, as it is a long msdn blog post.

Sorry, I have GPS (Haicom HI-406BT-C Bluetooth) and pda with Windows mobile 2005(HTC TyTn).I can’t connected…

steps…
Start/Settings/Connnections/Bluetooth
Check the “Turn on Bluetooth” checkbox.
Press the Device tab.
Press “Add new device…”
select your GPS device and press Next.
Check the “Serial Port” checkbox and press Finish.
Press the COM Ports tab.
Press “New outgoing port…”
Select your device and press Next.
Select a COM port that has been chosen for your GPS. For example, COM0.If i select com 1,3,5,6 or 7 i have error msg “The com port could not be created” and i select com 4
Press Finish.
I start GPS app ( Destinator pn)and I want to configure it to use COM4 but “GPS Program Port” is com 1,3,6,7.
With windows mobile 2003 i don’t have any problem and i think the bt manager is the best.

Best regards
Spal79

I’m going to try and follow the steps you did on my Qtek 9100 – it’s not a HTC Tytn, but I think the way to add a GPS device is related to Windows Mobile 5, not to the device itself.

I have ‘Manage GPS automatically (recommended)’ checked.

What I did before I got it working was to first pair my bluetooth gps with my pocket pc BEFORE doing anything else. I did that totally separately, before going further and setting up GPS Com ports and all. I then, still in bluetooth, set up a COM port (6).

Is your bluetooth gps already recognised (Settings, Bluetooth, Devices) by your device ?

Update : I checked off the steps you put in your post – could it be that you are following the smartphone setup instead of the pocket pc setup ?

Thanks for your help but I made it with these steps………..

1. Establish a bond with your GPS and select the checkbox for serial access.
2. In BT, select the new OUTGOING port to 8.
3. In the GPS control panel, select the GPS program to 0 and make sure that the hardware one, is set to None.
4. Start PN and the GPS settings, select another bluetooth GPS, and you will see COM 0 free. Select COM 0 and close PN.
5. At the GPS control panel again, now set GPS Program Port to COM 8 (before we set it up at 0).
6. In BT Manager create a new OUTGOING COM port as COM0.
7. Back again to GPS control panel and select NONE for both hardware and program ports.
8. Finally start PN and it should connect automatically. Wait for a couple of seconds and click the GPS settings and you should see it has connected.

bye…

My Navigation program (IGO) does not recognize COM 6 or 7, the only COM ports my i-mate K-Jam windows mobile 5 allows me to declare as both incoming and outgoinf COM ports, when I paired the Blue tooth GPS with the PDA.

any body has an idea what can I do?

I’m sorry, but I didn’t really understand your message, ELY. Are you saying that you have paired the bluetooth gps with your PDA, but that those are the only COM settings that you can select ?

And what is IGO ? I know TomTom, haven’t heard from IGO yet…

yes alex. i have the same problem, i paired the SPV M600(qtek s200) with holox BT321 gps receiver. I can only asign com6 or com7 on outgoing port and Navigator PN that i use can only see com0,1,2,3,4 and 9. I tried what is described above but no luck. is there a registry value i can change to make bluetooth manager to see the other com ports? any help?

Hi there Nikos,

did you follow all the steps that SPAL79 described ? Were there any different results from the ones that he described ? Please give some more detail if you haven’t been able to solve this as yet…

As I don’t have the program, I can’t really try it out, but perhaps it helps to detail the steps to see if you missed anything.

No, as far as I know there are no special registry values to change that will help – it’s really a dark art, setting up Bluetooth gps systems…

I have a QTEK 9100/Navigator 5 and BT359S. I followed Spal39’s instructions, but run into trouble…..any ideas please?

1. Establish a bond with your GPS and select the checkbox for serial access.
2. In BT, select the new OUTGOING port to 8. ……CAN ONLY CHOOSE 7 OR 8, TRIED BOTH
3. In the GPS control panel, select the GPS program to 0 and make sure that the hardware one, is set to None.
4. Start PN and the GPS settings, select another bluetooth GPS, and you will see COM 0 free. Select COM 0 and close PN.
5. At the GPS control panel again, now set GPS Program Port to COM 8 (before we set it up at 0)….CAN ONLY CHOOSE 7 OR 8, TRIED BOTH
6. In BT Manager create a new OUTGOING COM port as COM0….CANNOT CHOOSE COM0, ONLY COM7 OR COM 8
7. Back again to GPS control panel and select NONE for both hardware and program ports.
8. Finally start PN and it should connect automatically. Wait for a couple of seconds and click the GPS settings and you should see it has connected.

Hi Scott,

So, just to make sure, you first of all paired your bluetooth gps with your qtek 9100 right ? So they can see each other ?

And you are talking about TomTom navigator 5 ?

If so, you don’t need to follow the whole list of instructions, TT5 should be smart enough to find the gps by itself as long as it is paired.

But in TT5 you need to set up the bt gps device as a cabled ‘other’ device, and NOT select in TT5 the bluetooth setting.

I never could get TT5 to work selecting the bluetooth gps, I finally managed to get it to work using the ‘other’ gps mouse setting.

Hope that helps.

Hi Ben,

It’s Spal79 actually who supplied the instructions, Scott appears to be stuck using Navigator 5. But I’m glad you found the solution.

i have an imate jas jam and tomtom 6, tomtom only lets me use ports 3 and 7, so when i try to add the outgoing port for my bluetooth device it doesnt let me add port 7 or 3, keeps erroring..

any help??

email me at ais00107@bigpond.net.au

i have a problem running tomtom 6 on my ipaq 6915. it just refuses tofind any gps devices, even after a changed the ports for GPS. any ideas? btw, i run it in Israel with west european map (just want to check if it works for my europe trip)- may be this is the problem?

Hmm, another alex !
From a quick google on the net, I understand that your 6915 has a built-in gps and tomtom software delivered with it ?

Are you using another (bluetooth) gps system ?

Really, the more I get into contact with Windows mobile owners, the more it seems that each connection to a gps can only be made through some special custom wizardry !

Hello Spal79,
could you please help me connect my ipac hp 6828 that runs on mobile 5 with my GPS, I have tryed doing what you have here on the site but still can’t get it to work, I,m using MioMap v3 the softwear will not connect with the GPS….
